Cultural Influence and Dynamism of Culture in Consumer Behavior

Study material and explanations for Unit 3

Cultural Influence and Dynamism of Culture in Consumer Behavior

Culture is the invisible lens through which people view the world. It dictates what food is acceptable to eat, how clothes should look, what rituals accompany marriages, and how money is spent.

No marketing campaign can succeed if it insults or ignores the cultural values of its target audience.

1. What is Culture?

According to Leon G. Schiffman: “Culture is the sum total of learned beliefs, values, and customs that serve to direct the consumer behaviour of members of a particular society.”

Key Characteristics of Culture:

  1. Culture is Learned: Culture is not biologically inherited. It is acquired through socialization, family upbringing (Enculturation), and foreign travel (Acculturation).
  2. Culture is Shared: It is not an individual quirk; it is held in common by a substantial segment of society.
  3. Culture Satisfies Needs: Cultural customs persist because they provide order, guidance, and psychological comfort.
  4. Culture is Dynamic: It is not rigid cement; culture continuously evolves in response to technology, education, and global exposure.

2. Core Indian Cultural Values and Consumer Impact

India possesses a rich, unique cultural fabric that shapes consumer habits:

3. Dynamism of Culture: How Indian Consumer Values are Evolving

Over the past two decades, urbanization, smartphone connectivity, and rising incomes have triggered seismic cultural shifts:

Traditional Cultural Value Modern Emerging Cultural Value Impact on Consumer Market
Traditional Joint Families Nuclear families & double-income couples (DINKs). Boom in compact apartments, ready-to-eat meals, and day-care services.
Strict Cash Thrift Acceptance of digital credit & EMIs. Young consumers purchasing electronics, holidays, and fashion on BNPL / credit cards.
Cooking from Scratch Convenience & time-saving foods. Explosive rise of food delivery (Zomato, Swiggy) and quick groceries (Blinkit).
Rigid Gender Roles Equality & working professional women. Major surge in women’s personal mobility (scooters, cars) and financial investments.
Basic Survival Focus Health, wellness, and self-care. Booming sales of air purifiers, gym memberships, organic food, and premium skincare.

4. Subcultures: Diverse Threads Within the Fabric

A society contains distinct Subcultures—groups of people who share distinct cultural systems that set them apart from the larger society:

  • Regional / Linguistic Subcultures: North Indian vs South Indian taste profiles (wheat vs rice, filter coffee vs chai).
  • Religious Subcultures: Distinct ritual purchasing patterns across Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Jain, and Christian communities.
  • Generational Subcultures:
    • Gen Z & Millennials: Tech-first, value digital expression, eco-conscious, heavily influenced by social media.
    • Older Generations: Prioritize brand longevity, savings, and physical retail interaction.
