Marketing Mix (4Ps & 7Ps) and Marketing System

Study material and explanations for Unit 1

Marketing Mix (4Ps & 7Ps) and Marketing System

The Marketing Mix is the tactical toolbox of the marketing manager. It consists of all the controllable marketing variables that a firm blends together to produce the desired response in the target market.

1. The Traditional 4Ps Marketing Mix (E. Jerome McCarthy)

Formulated in 1960 by Jerome McCarthy and popularized by Philip Kotler, the traditional marketing mix consists of Four Ps:

                                THE TRADITIONAL 4Ps
                                         │
        ┌──────────────────┬─────────────┴─────────────┬──────────────────┐
        ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼
   [ PRODUCT ] [ PRICE ] [ PLACE ] [ PROMOTION ]
   • Features & design • List price & discounts • Channels (retail)• Advertising
   • Quality & brand • Payment terms & EMIs • Warehousing • Sales promotions
   • Packaging & sizes • Credit policies • Logistics & SCM • PR & personal selling
  1. Product: The tangible good or intangible service that satisfies the customer’s need. Covers product design, quality, brand name, variety, features, packaging, warranty, and returns.
  2. Price: The amount of money customers must pay to obtain the product. Covers list price, retail margins, trade discounts, festive allowances, credit terms, and zero-cost EMI plans.
  3. Place (Distribution): All company activities that make the product available and accessible to target customers. Covers selection of distribution channels, retailers, wholesalers, warehouse inventory levels, and logistics transportation.
  4. Promotion: All communication activities that inform, persuade, and remind buyers about the product. Covers advertising, public relations, personal selling, sales promotion, and direct digital marketing.

2. The Expanded 7Ps Marketing Mix for Services (Booms & Bitner)

Because services are intangible, perishable, inseparable, and variable, three additional Ps are required:

                          THE EXTENDED 3Ps FOR SERVICES
                                        │
           ┌────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────┐
           ▼ ▼ ▼
      [ PEOPLE ] [ PROCESS ] [ PHYSICAL EVIDENCE ]
Employees, flight attendants, Step-by-step service Clean ambience, hotel lobby,
bank tellers, doctor bedside delivery workflows, plush uniforms, intuitive app
manner, customer support. digital app onboarding. UI, printed bills.
  1. People: All human actors who play a role in service delivery and thus influence the buyer’s perceptions (bank cashiers, airline pilots, hospitality staff).
  2. Process: The actual procedures, mechanisms, and flow of activities by which the service is delivered (e.g., self-check-in kiosks at airports, paperless UPI digital onboarding).
  3. Physical Evidence: The tangible environment in which the service is delivered and any tangible goods that facilitate performance (e.g., luxurious five-star hotel lobby, clean hospital smell, crisp uniforms).

3. From 4Ps to 4Cs: The Customer Perspective (Robert Lauterborn)

While the 4Ps represent the seller’s perspective, Robert Lauterborn mapped them to the buyer’s perspective:

Seller’s 4Ps Buyer’s 4Cs Customer Focus
Product Customer Solution Customers do not buy a product; they buy a solution to their problem.
Price Customer Cost Customers evaluate total cost (time, travel, stress) not just monetary price.
Place Convenience Customers desire frictionless ease of buying (e-commerce, doorstep delivery).
Promotion Communication Customers hate one-way ads; they desire two-way interactive dialogue.

4. The Marketing System

A Marketing System is an integrated network of interacting institutions that work together to create, facilitate, and execute the exchange of goods and services.

A Simple Marketing System:

                       Communication (Ads, Brand Story)
                ┌──────────────────────────────────────────────┐
                │ ▼
         [ INDUSTRY ] [ MARKET ]
        (Collection of (Collection of
           Sellers) Buyers)
                ▲ │
                └──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
                         Money (Sales Revenue, Payments)
  • The Industry (Sellers) sends products, services, and communications (advertisements, promotions) to the Market (Buyers).
  • In return, the Market sends money (revenue) and vital information (customer feedback, ratings, complaints) back to the Industry.

The Macro Marketing System Actors:

A complete enterprise marketing system operates within a broader network:

  1. Suppliers: Provide raw materials, electricity, and components.
  2. Company (Marketer): Transforms materials into finished offerings.
  3. Marketing Intermediaries: Wholesalers, retailers, transport companies, and ad agencies.
  4. Competitors: Rival brands vying for the same wallet share.
  5. End Consumers: Final buyers who consume the products.
