Study material and explanations for Unit 1

Brokerage, Del Credere & Mathematical Modelling Activity

1. Commercial Concept of Brokerage

A broker is an agent employed to make contracts for the purchase and sale of property, commodities, or securities between two principals without taking possession of the subject matter:

  • Brokerage Remuneration: Usually calculated as a percentage of the gross market transacted value.
  • Buyer and Seller Charges: Depending on market custom (e.g., real estate or stock brokerage), brokerage may be charged to both parties or exclusively to one party.
Mathematical Calculation Rules for Brokerage
When Buying Total Cost to Buyer = Market Price + Brokerage:
The buyer incurs brokerage as an additional purchase cost, increasing the effective cost per unit.
When Selling Net Proceeds to Seller = Market Price - Brokerage:
The seller pays brokerage out of the sale proceeds, reducing the net cash received.
Del Credere Guaranteed Solvency Commission:
Additional percentage paid to broker to indemnify the principal against bad debts or buyer insolvencies.

2. Practical Business Calculation Problem

Question: An investor instructs a stockbroker to purchase 500 shares of an industrial company listed at ₹640 each, and sell 300 shares of another company at ₹850 each. The broker charges 0.5% brokerage on purchases and 0.4% on sales. Compute the net cash outflow or inflow for the investor.

Step-by-Step Solution:

  1. Calculate the Purchase Transaction:

    • Gross Value of Shares = 500 × ₹640 = ₹3,20,000
    • Brokerage on Purchase (0.5%) = (0.5 / 100) × 3,20,000 = ₹1,600
    • Total Outflow for Buyer = 3,20,000 + 1,600 = ₹3,21,600
  2. Calculate the Sale Transaction:

    • Gross Value of Shares Sold = 300 × ₹850 = ₹2,55,000
    • Brokerage on Sale (0.4%) = (0.4 / 100) × 2,55,000 = ₹1,020
    • Net Inflow to Seller = 2,55,000 - 1,020 = ₹2,53,980
  3. Determine Net Financial Settlement:

    • Net Settlement = Net Cash Inflow - Total Cash Outflow
    • Net Settlement = 2,53,980 - 3,21,600 = -₹67,620
    • Conclusion: The investor has a Net Cash Outflow of ₹67,620 (amount to be paid to broker).

3. Practical Activity: Mathematical Modelling Projects

The curriculum requires students to develop practical mathematical models:

  • Project Scope: Constructing Excel-based pricing simulation models for retail trade (inputting list price, progressive discount ladders, brokerage margins, and GST rates).
  • Statistical Regression Application: Modeling historical sales volume against advertising budget ratios to project future turnover.
