The Four Functional Layers of Cloud Architecture (SaaS to Hardware)

Study material and explanations for Unit 2

Layers and Types of Clouds Architecture

From an engineering perspective, cloud computing is organized into four stacked layers. Each layer does a specific job and hides complex hardware details from the layer above it.

1. The Four Fundamental Architectural Layers

The Four Functional Layers of Cloud Architecture
Layer 4Application Layer (SaaS)
Web apps accessed directly by end-users (Gmail, Canva, Netflix)
Layer 3Platform Layer (PaaS)
Programming runtimes (Java/Python/Node.js) & database engines
Layer 2Infrastructure / Virtualization Layer (IaaS)
Hypervisors dividing physical CPU, RAM & disks into virtual machines
Layer 1Physical Resource Layer
Physical data center buildings, server racks, cables & power supplies

2. Detailed Breakdown of the 4 Layers (In Simple Words)

1. Physical Layer (Tier 1)

  • The actual physical hardware you can touch: metal server racks, high-speed multi-core CPUs, hard disks, power supplies, diesel generators, and data center air conditioning.
  • Includes high-speed optical fiber cables connecting server racks.

2. Infrastructure / Virtualization Layer (Tier 2)

  • Uses Hypervisors (like VMware ESXi or KVM) to slice physical servers into multiple virtual machines (VMs).
  • Uses Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to create virtual routers and firewalls without touching physical cables.

3. Platform Layer (Tier 3)

  • Provides the operating systems, programming runtimes (Python, Java JVM, PHP), and database servers (MySQL, MongoDB) so developers can run code.
  • Handles automated scheduling and auto-scaling.

4. Application Layer (Tier 4)

  • The top-level software interfaces that students and everyday users interact with in their web browsers or smartphones (e.g., Google Docs, Zoom, Spotify).

3. Types of Clouds by Architectural Purpose

  1. Enterprise Private Clouds: Built inside a company’s own office or private data center for maximum privacy (e.g., Bank data centers).
  2. Hyper-Scale Public Clouds: Massive public clouds operating millions of servers across continents (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud).
  3. High-Performance Computing (HPC) Clouds: Supercomputing clusters designed for heavy scientific calculations, weather forecasting, and AI training.
  4. Edge Clouds / Fog Computing: Small micro-data centers placed close to 5G mobile towers and factories to process data in milliseconds for autonomous cars and robotics.

💡 DAVV Exam Tip

Question (10 Marks): “Explain the 4 functional architectural layers of Cloud Computing with a diagram. Classify the architectural types of clouds.”

  • Draw the 4-tier stack diagram (Physical -> Infrastructure -> Platform -> Application).
  • Explain each layer with simple bullet points and real-world examples.
  • Mention Enterprise, Hyperscale, and Edge clouds in the classification section.
