Cloud Computing Security Challenges and Threats (CSA Top Threats)
The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) regularly publishes the most critical security vulnerabilities threatening cloud environments.
1. Top Cloud Security Threats
Top Cloud Security Vulnerabilities
1. Data Breaches
Confidential data stolen due to poor encryption or weak passwords
2. Cloud Misconfiguration
Accidentally leaving storage buckets (S3) open to the public internet
3. Insecure APIs
Unauthenticated API endpoints allowing attackers to download data
4. Account Hijacking
Attackers taking over admin accounts via phishing or credential stuffing
Detailed Threat Breakdown:
1. Cloud Misconfiguration (The #1 Cloud Vulnerability)
- Unlike traditional hacking where an attacker cracks complex encryption, most cloud hacks happen because a company administrator forgot to tick a checkbox or accidentally set an AWS S3 bucket permission to “Public”.
- Anyone on the internet who knows the URL can download sensitive company PDFs and customer databases without entering a password!
2. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks
- Attackers use botnets (thousands of infected computers) to flood a cloud website with millions of fake web requests every second.
- The web server gets overwhelmed and crashes, denying access to genuine students and customers.
3. Insecure Interfaces and APIs
- Cloud software communicates using REST APIs. If developers forget to implement authentication checks on API routes (e.g.,
/api/v1/getStudentDetails?id=101), an attacker can write a simple Python script to loop through all IDs and steal entire student databases.
4. Account and Service Hijacking
- Attackers trick an employee into revealing their cloud login credentials via Phishing emails.
- Once inside, attackers can deploy crypto-mining scripts on expensive GPU servers, leaving the company with massive bills of lakhs of rupees.
5. Insider Threats
- A disgruntled former employee whose login access was not immediately revoked after resignation can log in remotely and delete production database backups.
💡 DAVV Exam Tip
Question (10 Marks): “What are the major security challenges and threats in Cloud Computing? Explain with examples.”
- Explain Misconfiguration as the leading cause of cloud data breaches.
- Detail at least 4 major threats: Data Breaches, DDoS, Insecure APIs, Account Hijacking.
- Provide realistic mitigation strategies for each (MFA, WAF, S3 bucket encryption, IAM audits).
