Federated Clouds & Inter-Cloud Architecture: Coordinator vs Exchange

Study material and explanations for Unit 5

Federated Clouds and Inter-Cloud Architecture

Just as no single bank has ATMs in every single village of India (so banks form network partnerships like RuPay or VISA to let you use any ATM), no single cloud provider can build data centers in every city on Earth!

1. What is Cloud Federation? (In Simple Words)

Cloud Federation (also called Inter-Cloud) is the seamless interconnection and collaboration of multiple independent cloud providers (such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and private enterprise clouds) to share resources, scale beyond individual capacity, and prevent vendor lock-in.

Federated Inter-Cloud Architecture
🤝 Why Providers Form Federations
  • Handle Massive Spikes: If AWS runs out of Mumbai capacity, it automatically delegates overflow traffic to a partner cloud.
  • Global Reach: Deliver content closer to users worldwide without constructing new physical buildings.
  • Prevent Outages: If Cloud A experiences a complete power failure, workloads shift to Cloud B instantly.
🛡️ Why Customers Want Federation
  • Zero Vendor Lock-In: Move apps freely between AWS and Azure whenever pricing changes.
  • Best-of-Breed Services: Use AWS for EC2 servers, Google Cloud for AI/TensorFlow, and Azure for Active Directory.

2. Types of Cloud Federation

1. Loose Federation (Voluntary Partnership)

  • Clouds collaborate on an ad-hoc, temporary basis via standardized web APIs.
  • Each provider keeps 100% independent ownership of pricing, user databases, and infrastructure.

2. Tight Federation (Unified Platform)

  • Multiple cloud providers sign formal legal treaties and adopt a unified, shared identity management, billing, and scheduling platform.
  • Users see a single seamless cloud interface, completely unaware that their VMs are running across 3 different companies.

3. Major Challenges in Cloud Federation

  1. Heterogeneity: AWS uses different APIs, VM formats (AMIs), and virtual networks than Microsoft Azure or OpenStack. Translating between them is difficult.
  2. SLA Management: If a customer application slows down across a federated path, which provider pays the penalty? Finding where the lag occurred is complex.
  3. Data Sovereignty & Legal Compliance: Government laws (like India’s DPDP Act) require citizens’ financial data to stay inside Indian territory. Federated routing must not accidentally route data through foreign servers.

💡 DAVV Exam Tip

Question (5 Marks): “What is Cloud Federation (Inter-Cloud)? Explain its advantages and challenges.”

  • Give the banking ATM analogy: Independent providers teaming up to share resources.
  • List 3 advantages: Infinite scalability, avoiding vendor lock-in, and global geographic reach.
  • List 3 challenges: API heterogeneity, SLA enforcement, and data sovereignty regulations.
