Goals and Applications of Computer Networks

Study material and explanations for Unit 1

Network Goals and Applications

What is a Computer Network? (In Simple Words)

In simple words, a Computer Network is a collection of two or more computers or electronic devices connected together using cables or wireless signals so that they can communicate, share data, and share hardware devices.

💡 Real-Life Example for Students:
Think of your College Computer Lab! There might be 40 computers, but only one laser printer placed on the teacher’s table. Instead of buying 40 separate printers for ₹10,000 each, all 40 computers are connected over a Local Area Network (LAN). Any student can press Ctrl + P from computer #23, and the document prints on that single shared printer. This saves your college lakhs of rupees!

1. Primary Goals of Computer Networks

Why do businesses, colleges, and governments build computer networks? Here are the 5 major goals:

5 Primary Goals of Computer Networks
1. Resource Sharing
Share printers, hard drives, software licenses & internet connections
2. High Reliability
If one server fails, backup servers take over with zero data loss
3. Cost Reduction
Saves massive money by sharing hardware instead of buying standalone units
4. High Scalability
Easily plug in new computers or smartphones as an organization grows
5. Fast Communication
Send emails, messages, video calls, and bank transfers within seconds

1. Resource Sharing

  • Hardware Sharing: Multiple users share expensive peripherals like laser printers, scanners, and high-capacity storage servers.
  • Software & Data Sharing: Instead of installing software from 50 separate CDs, software is installed on a central server. Everyone accesses the same company database simultaneously.

2. High Reliability (Fault Tolerance)

  • If a bank has all its customer data on only one computer and that computer’s hard disk dies, all customer money records are lost.
  • In a network, data is duplicated across multiple machines. If Computer A crashes, Computer B immediately serves the requests without interruption.

3. Cost Reduction (Money Saving)

  • Centralized network servers are vastly cheaper to maintain than buying individual standalone high-end computers for every employee.

4. Scalability

  • You can easily expand your network. If your college admits 100 new students, you just connect new Ethernet cables to the existing network switch without rebuilding the whole system.

5. Fast Communication Medium

  • Enables real-time communication tools: email, WhatsApp messaging, Zoom video calls, and UPI instant money transfers.

2. Real-World Applications of Computer Networks

A. Business Applications

  1. Resource Sharing: Sharing printers, scanners, and enterprise databases (ERP/CRM).
  2. Client-Server Architecture: Employees access company financial records from their desks via desktop clients connected to a central database server.
  3. E-Commerce & Online Banking: Platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and NetBanking rely 100% on network communication.

B. Home and Personal Applications

  1. Internet Access: Surfing web pages, watching YouTube, streaming Netflix, and scrolling Instagram.
  2. Personal Communication: WhatsApp chats, video calls with family, email.
  3. Smart Home Devices (IoT): Controlling smart TVs, Alexa, and smart bulbs from your smartphone over Wi-Fi.

💡 DAVV Exam Tip

Question (5 Marks): “What is a Computer Network? Explain its primary goals.”

  • Give the 2-line simple definition: Collection of interconnected autonomous computers.
  • Explain the 5 goals: Resource Sharing, High Reliability, Cost Reduction, Scalability, and Fast Communication.
  • Give the college lab printer example for Resource Sharing.
