Overview & Classification of Local Area Networks (LAN)

Study material and explanations for Unit 3

Overview and Classification of Local Area Networks (LAN)

What is a LAN? (In Simple Words)

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects computers and peripheral devices within a limited geographic area—such as a single room, a college computer laboratory, a school building, or a university campus (typically within a range of a few meters to 1-2 kilometers).

💡 Real-Life Example:
Your college computer lab or your home Wi-Fi network. Your smartphone, laptop, smart TV, and printer are all connected to the same Wi-Fi router. Files can be shared between your laptop and phone at lightning-fast speeds without consuming any of your monthly mobile internet data pack!

1. Key Characteristics of a LAN

  1. Limited Geographic Span: Covers a single office room, building, or college campus.
  2. Privately Owned: Built and maintained by a single person, college, or company (not controlled by telecom companies).
  3. Very High Data Transfer Speed: Typical speeds range from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
  4. Extremely Low Error Rates: Because cables are short and indoors, noise interference is minimal compared to long-distance telephone lines.

2. Hardware Components of a LAN

To build a functioning LAN, you need five essential hardware components:

Essential Hardware Components of a LAN
1. NIC (Network Interface Card)
Hardware chip in your PC with a globally unique 48-bit MAC address
2. Transmission Media
Cat6 Twisted Pair copper cables with RJ-45 jacks, or Wi-Fi radio waves
3. Network Switch / Hub
Central junction box with 24 or 48 ports connecting all lab computers
4. Network Router
Gateway device connecting the local college LAN to the global Internet
5. Network Operating System
Software managing user logins and file permissions (Windows Server / Linux)

3. Classification of LANs

LANs are classified based on three primary criteria:

A. Classification by Transmission Medium

  • Wired LAN: Uses physical cables (Cat6 UTP Ethernet cables or optical fiber). Immune to radio interference, highly secure.
  • Wireless LAN (WLAN): Uses radio waves (IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi). Devices connect through a Wireless Access Point (WAP).

B. Classification by Network Topology

  • Star LAN (Most Common): All computers connect to a central switch.
  • Bus LAN: Computers connected along a single coaxial backbone cable (legacy 10BASE2).
  • Ring LAN: Computers connected in a closed circle (legacy IBM Token Ring).

C. Classification by Architecture

  • Client-Server LAN: Central file/database server manages data and user security.
  • Peer-to-Peer LAN: Small workgroup (5-10 computers) where all machines have equal privileges.

💡 DAVV Exam Tip

Question (5 Marks): “Define LAN. Explain the key hardware components required to establish a LAN.”

  • Give the definition and 4 characteristics: Limited area, Private ownership, High speed, Low error rate.
  • Name and describe the 5 components: NIC, Cable (Cat6), Switch, Router, and NOS.
